The Local Hotel
A PROPOSAL FOR A NEW HOTEL IN WASHINGTON DC │FALL 2022
For this project, I was given the freedom to create my own program for what my proposed hotel would be. After researching hotels in DC and the current market trend, I determined that the best hotel for the Union Station Area was a 4-star Boutique Hotel with 84 guest rooms.
The Local Hotel would attract mostly millennial leisure travelers seeking for a unique local experience in DC and business travelers hoping for extended vacation after their work week. The hotel would connect guests with local favorites and feature local food in hotel restaurant and artworks/furniture around the lobby and guest rooms.
My main idea was to change the form and function of lobbies to offer work spaces with easy access to snacks, caffeine and cocktails. Additionally I would provide a space for fitness and wellness on the second floor. The guest rooms would have large windows and tall ceilings to complete the 4 star experience.
For the elevations, I decided to try Art Deco to amplify the chic and modern program. Art deco is also fairly popular with millennials. The hardest challenge to me was finding out the best art deco precedent to use for my hotel because there were not many art deco buildings in DC. Instead I looked at Chicago, Miami, and my own campus to try and fuse those different styles together.
