AP Art Studio 2019
Concentration.
For the Concentration portion of AP Art Studio, students were asked to create a collection of works centered under one central theme. For my theme, I decided to do something surrounding my Vietnamese identity and heritage. Growing up, I loved to read fairy tales and nursery rhymes. I was also a fan of watching animations movies from studios such as Disney, Pixar, and Studio Ghibli. As a result, I fused both of those interests into a theme to recreate my favorite stories with a Vietnamese spin.
For my artworks, I used a combination watercolor and gouache to create almost a children’s book illustration effect. I hadn’t used watercolor or gouache before but I enjoyed the way the medium was able to convey a playful mood to my pieces. My favorite works are “Thee Bull Jumped Over the Moon” and “The Koi Mermaid” both of which are my first and last pieces of the series.
Quality.
For the Quality portion of AP Art Studio, I had to submit artworks that demonstrated my expertise in a wide variety of mediums and styles. Here are my best works, including a portrait of my late grandfather drawn with pencil.
I was also blessed to also have my piece “New Orleans 2300” hung up in the Capitol in Washington D.C. as an honor for winning the Congressional Art Competition, Louisiana 2019.
